OWL Teacher

OWL (Our Whole Lives) Teachers work in a team to teach sexuality education classes- levels include K-1, 5-6, and 8-9 grades.

Detailed Description:
OWL Teachers present sexuality education to children/youth as a team for a set number of weeks in a row. The K-1 class is eight sessions (one session a week), the 5-6 class is 10 sessions, and the 8-9 class is 26 sessions. OWL Teachers receive curriculum and guidance from the DFM, training from the UUA on how to present and approach the class, and then work together to implement the class. The goal of an OWL Teacher is to know your kids well, establish QUUF as a place one can be their authentic self, and to present and explore accurate, inclusive, non-judgmental sexuality education. The number of children in each class varies between about 10-18, depending on the year.
Service Term:
1 year
Benefits for the Volunteer and the Congregation:

OWL is the best sexuality education program out there, and we are fortunate to be able to educate our children on their bodies, on making healthy choices, and on being informed about sexuality. OWL Teachers provide a vital, needed service to our community and are rewarded with fun, enlightenment, and a deep dive into important topics. This role is a great position for those who are sincerely interested in young people and in expansive health education. Effective teachers are essential to building community, knowledge, and trust among our young people.

Skills Needed:

Successful teachers enjoy children, are able to establish loving boundaries, and understand the focus is on providing accurate information to our young people and allowing them to make their own choices. Teachers must be flexible, good listeners, confidential, and willing to grow. Teachers must be willing to work through their own thoughts and feelings around sexuality before beginning the class, and being able to leave their personal opinions and experiences to the side while working through the materials with the class.

Training, assistance, and safety requirements:

Teachers must read the QUUF Safety Policy, sign appropriate documents, agree to a background screening, and attend a weekend training on leading OWL.
